The Sun will continue burning like it does now until it becomes a red giant in about 4 to 5 billion years. The core will shrink and get hotter until it stops burning fuel. When that happens, helium fusion will start, and the Sun will grow larger. It will become a hundred times bigger before it stops growing. As it expands, it may swallow the Earth. Eventually, the Sun will run out of energy and become a small, cool white dwarf.
